Murder, War, and Capital Punishment

"You shall not murder" (Exodus 20:13) is how most modern versions of the Bible translate the fifth commandment. Many of us are at least as familiar, however, with the King James language: "Thou shalt not kill." Why do modern translations use the word "murder" instead of "kill"? Moreover, how should Christians feel about killings during wartime, in self-defense or to defend others, and capital punishment? This week's article takes a critical look at this difficult topic.
